Painting the Town: Call out for Mural Artworks

Following on from the success of Painting the Prom on St Leonards seafront, we are thrilled to announce Painting the Town – a call-out for a local artist or collective to design and paint a themed mural in the Castle Street pedestrian underpass.
This is a unique opportunity to create a new artwork in the centre of town that will engage, surprise and delight those who see it.
Submission is free, and the selected artist/collective will receive a fee of £1700 plus materials to create their mural.
The mural will be launched as part of Hastings Last Thursdays, an ambitious programme of public artworks, performances and live music funded by ERDF Welcome Back Fund via Hastings Brough Council and produced by Home Live Art and Hastings Fat Tuesday.

Theme: Hastings 2066
The mural on this site depicts the famous Battle of Hastings. In 1066 William, Duke of Normandy fought the English Army under Anglo-Saxon King, Harold Godwinson. Armies wore chainmail, rode horseback and shot bows and arrows. Nobody could have imagined back then what the world looks like now.
What will Hastings look like, one thousand years after the Battle of Hastings, in 2066?
Having played its part in sharing the region’s history with visitors and locals alike, the mural – commissioned by Hastings Borough Council in 1988 – is now in a state of disrepair. Hastings Borough Council, working with Home Live Art, invites YOU to share YOUR proposal for a replacement mural, based around the theme ‘Hastings 2066’.
What will it be like? Perhaps you imagine the future as busy and full of life, or perhaps it’s calm and empty. Will Hastings be under water, overtaken by marine life? Perhaps it’s a fantasy world full of vibrant colours, or perhaps it’s filled with abstract shapes, lines and colours to make our community feel happy? Who will live here? Why? How will everyone spend their time?
After a year of many challenges, we offer an opportunity for you to share your future with us.

A sketch/ drawing of your prospective mural design
A paragraph explaining your idea

Eligibility
This opportunity is only for creatives who live or work in Hastings and Rother
Artists under the age of 18 must have a guardian permission to use their work
Budget
If your design is selected, you will receive a £1700 fee plus materials to execute your mural.
Timeline
Submit your design by midnight on Friday 25 February 2022.
You will hear whether you’ve been selected by Thursday 3 March 2022
The mural must be completed between before Thursday 31st March 2022.
Location and dimensions
The Castle Street underpass is the pedestrian tunnel which bridges Hastings Town Centre and the Old Town. It features two walls opposite each other.
Each wall is 14 metres in length and 1.95 metres in height.
The walls will be treated beforehand so the artist will have a plain surface to apply the mural.
Access
An access budget of £300 has been made available for those that may need help with the cost of participating. This money can be used for a variety of costs including transport, childcare or to cover the cost of a personal assistant.

Evaluation
At the completion of the project, artists are required to complete a short evaluation. A template/survey document will be provided.

Health / Safety / Covid
We expect all artists to work in line with any government restrictions and supply a full Risk Assement.
Home Live Art has a COVID-19 Infection Control Policy and Protocol which will be used throughout the project and can be provided on request.
A physical barrier (without obstructing access) will be in place to ensure that no member of the public comes closer than the two metres during the painting of murals.
Funding
Painting the Town is funded by Hastings Borough Council and the Welcome Back Fund (European Regional Development Fund and HM Government).
