Celebrating Black Joy: Share Your Objects!

with Harold Offeh

Calling all members of the Black community in Hastings and surrounding areas! We're on a mission to uncover the everyday objects that hold personal significance and reflect your experiences of Black Joy.

Selected objects will be displayed at the Hastings Museum during the BLACK JOY! Up Close and Personal exhibition, running from 4th May to 5th August 2024.

Additionally, the owners of five chosen objects will have the opportunity to share their stories in person at our Bring and Brag event with artist Harold Offeh on Sunday, 9th June, at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery.

Our aim is to celebrate the incredible stories and rich history of the local Black community in Hastings, while supporting the Hastings Museum and Art Gallery in its goal of ensuring that missing stories and histories are visible in our town's museum.

Deadline for submissions: Friday 24 May 2024

What Object Can You Share?

Your object can be anything that holds special meaning to you and speaks to the theme of Black Joy. It doesn't have to be an antique; it could be your mother's favourite cooking pot, a much-loved jumper, a family heirloom or a cherished memento. Whether it reflects your cultural heritage or simply brings you joy, we want to hear from you.

How Do You Share Your Object?

Fill in this form which asks for a photo or description of your object and the reason why it makes you think of Black Joy.

Alternatively, share a photo of your object on Instagram and the reason why it makes you think of black joy, with the hashtag #blackjoyobjects and tag @homeliveart and @playingtheraccard.

What Happens If Your Object Gets Selected for the Bring and Brag event?

You'll be invited to attend a workshop. Here, you'll meet other participants and collaborate with artist Harold Offeh to delve into the stories and emotions behind your object. Together, you will explore how it connects to the theme of Black Joy and brainstorm ideas for presenting it at the Bring and Brag event. If your item is too large or fragile, no problem—just bring a photo instead.
