Artist Call Out: Playing the Race Card Exhibition

We thrilled to announce that Playing the Race Card, a trailblazing collective in Hastings championing the work of Black artists, have launched an open call for artwork submissions for their highly anticipated exhibition at the Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, scheduled to run from May 3 to August 25, 2024.

Inspired by the success of the ground-breaking 2022 exhibition in St Leonards, this new edition will explore the theme of ‘Black Joy’ and will be accompanied by a dynamic program of talks, performances, and workshops throughout Hastings. The event aims to celebrate local Black artists while shining a spotlight on the positive aspects of Black culture, resistance, and happiness.

They are now inviting Black artists in East Sussex, West Sussex, and Kent to SUBMIT YOUR ARTWORK on this theme to be part of this powerful exhibition.

The deadline for submissions is 29 September 2023.

Visit the Playing the Race Card website to apply

Deadline: 29 September 2023

More information on Playing the Race Card

Through a range of thought-provoking exhibitions, workshops, talks, and performances, ‘Playing the Race Card’ creates a town-wide conversation on race, identity and social justice.

It was started in 2020 by local Hastings resident Claudine Eccleston in response to her own experiences of this diminishing term and is led by a Working Group of community members with producing and financial support from Home Live Art.
